emerge Cover Art–Artist Spotlight

emerge is gearing up for another year of production. As always, the cover art competition is a source of high anticipation. This year’s theme is “community”. Anyone can submit their art or photography. See full submission details here—the deadline is July 11, 2018.

As we look forward to what this year’s cover might bring, we thought we’d look back at past covers and celebrate the artist. Here, we catch up with Akem, winning cover artist for emerge 16.

The 2016 emerge anthology cover gave Akem her start as a book cover illustrator. Since then, she’s gone on to place two covers with Pulp Literature. She has another cover coming out this year from The Book Smugglers.

Akem says she forgot she was an artist and writer for over a decade and is making up for lost time. She was mentored under Hiromi Goto in TWS 2016 and was amazed at the community and support she found in her TWS cohort and the TWS community at large. Since graduation, she has completed a picture book, several short stories, and is now working on a comic based on the story she worked on at TWS. In Jan 2018, she finally began a long-held dream of working in the animation industry as a Background Painter–the show will be out on Netflix in 2019. Check out www.akemiart.ca for art, writing, and social media whereabouts.
