Janet Fretter is a writer, editor, and mini-manuscript consultant. She writes short fiction and narrative non-fiction. Most recently, her work was longlisted for the Creative Nonfiction Collective (CNCF)/carte blanche 2016 nonfiction contest. Her novel in progress is currently doing drawer time while it decides what it wants to be.
Janet is an alumna of SFU’s inaugural Southbank Writers’ Program (2012) and the Writer’s Studio (2013) under fiction mentor Timothy Taylor. She returned to TWS as fiction mentor apprentice in 2014, working with the generous Kevin Chong. That same year, Janet had the privilege of being mentored in the role of managing editor for emerge by Andrew Chesham, our publisher. She has enjoyed giving editorial oversight to TWS’s annual anthology since that time, and continues to grow both valued relationships and concrete skills through the experience. Practical courses in SFU’s Editing Certificate program inform Janet’s contribution as managing editor. She’ll complete the program in summer 2017.
Janet is past co-host of the TWS Reading Series (2014-15), an active member of the writing community in the Lower Mainland, and a passionate reader and supporter of all things literary and local. When not herding cats in her other role as office manager for a family-owned business, she provides mini-manuscript consults, a service offered by the Writer’s Studio in partnership with Vancouver Public Library.
