We encourage students to think of emerge as an opportunity to show readers what they have been working on during their year at The Writer’s Studio. Students can submit whatever piece they like, as long as it conforms to the submission guidelines, and it does not exceed the page/word/line limit.
To give you an idea of your audience, emerge is read and purchased by friends and family of our students, as well as people interested in The Writer’s Studio.
We do not set a theme for each emerge anthology. Instead, we have an open submission policy: each student chooses which piece they wish to submit for publication in emerge. The section editors provide feedback on each piece and create the table of contents. A featured guest author from the broader literary community reads the anthology and writes a foreword which highlights the themes that run through the submissions.
Submitting an Excerpt from a Larger Piece
When submitting an excerpt from a larger piece, aim for a scene with a full story arc — beginning, middle, and end. This is the most satisfying for readers.
